Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Our Programs

Thinking about starting Taekwondo or kickboxing at Josiah Kicks Academy? Here are the questions we hear most from new students and parents in Richmond.

Not at all. Every class is built so complete beginners can follow along from day one, and our coaches break each technique down step by step. Most of our students walked in with zero martial arts background.

Yes. Your first class is free, for both kids and adults, so you can try the room, meet the coaches, and see how a session actually runs before committing to anything. Book a time that suits you and we will take care of the rest.

ITF Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art built on patterns, precise technique, and dynamic kicking, with belt ranks marking your progress. Our kickboxing classes focus on punches, kicks, pad work, and conditioning. Many students train in both.

Our Kids classes run from ages 5 to 12 and our Teens program covers ages 13 to 17. We also run Adaptive Martial Arts for kids and teens who benefit from a smaller, tailored session.

Comfortable athletic clothing and bare feet are all you need. We train on mats, so leave the shoes at the edge of the floor. If you continue with us, your coach will let you know when a uniform is the right next step.

No. Sparring is always optional and only introduced once you have the technique and control to do it safely. Beginners spend their early classes on fundamentals, footwork, and pad work.

Our head coach has trained for nearly 20 years and has coached at the national level with Team Canada ITF Taekwondo. That experience shapes every class, but so does our commitment to inclusion, which is why we run dedicated Adaptive Martial Arts programs alongside our regular classes.
